I resonate with what you wrote. The distinction between a mere trip and intentional fieldwork is so crucial. How do you scale this 'masterclass in educational design' across diverse school environments, especially with limited resources? Your insights here are incredibly valuable for educators.

A great point to note in regard to the transferability of this approach.

While getting away from the building is a treat (but more expensive and logistically challenging) I’ve always found that similar benefits can be had in as little as a single class period by using the immediate environs just outside (or even inside) the school building. The hallway, school yard, or even block just outside can open up fieldwork opportunities as can bringing the outside world in (inviting a professional, community member or organization) to the classroom for example is another powerful ‘fieldwork-adjacent’ approach that connects the classroom to the ‘real-world’

Go Monster Maples!!!

Whenever I do anything with my kid's elementary school, I'm astounded at how much better elementary teachers are than me. (I'm a high school teacher - no rhyming field trips for my students)

This is the truth. The elementary ed folks are conducting symphonies with our youngest learners on the daily. Much to be learned and inspired by from their daily doses of magic.
